All disks are compatible with GNU/ Linux . You could also make your own external HDD using a external case. You can make a 500 Gb external for around 5000 bucks .

You can keep it in any format you like. Warranty is independent of the file-system. You could consider keeping it in FAT 32 / NTFS if you want to use it across platforms. You will need ntfs-3g to write to NTFS disks under GNU/Linux and MacFuse + ntfs-3g to write to NTFS under OSX.
