You will need to edit your xorg.conf to include the resolution.
It can be done using the following command
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Or by manually editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file(not at all
recommended)
Or wait for gutsy to release, it will have GUI to do this.
Just changing the resolution might not help. My friend has
a viewsonic monitor too, he required to change refresh rate
 from 60 to 75Hz for it to display in wide-screen mode.
