Do you have gcj installed? It may be interfering with icedtea. Check the 
output of  'dpkg -l gcj*'. If there is any gcj related package installed 
then do 'sudo apt-get --purge autoremove gcj-4.2-base' (or similar) and 
then try setting java alternatives again with 'sudo 
update-java-alternatives --auto'.
