Make sure that you have ubuntu-desktop package installed before
updating. It is a meta package that depends on all the default
installed packages. It will ensure a smooth transition from one
release to another (even if you skip one in between).

Also after dist-upgrade if you face any problem, try to identify the
package and then do a dpkg-reconfigure for that package. If in doubt
then do 'dpkg-reconfigure -a'.
