Well, indeed it is possible to use _some_ Windows applications on
GNU/Linux by using something called Wine [1] which is a Free and Open
Source implementation of the Win32 API on GNU/Linux. But it may not
provide very good performance in some cases where you can use CrossOver
Office [2] which is a proprietary software based on some Wine code. I
have heard that CrossOver Office is pretty good in terms of providing
good support for MS Office on GNU/Linux.
But in my opinion, OpenOffice.org is a perfectly good alternative for MS
Office and it supports importing MS Office documents. OpenOffice.org is
installed on Ubuntu by default.
