[ubuntu-in] dial up problem

I have just installed ubantu version 5.04 on a pentium III machine.
everything went smoothly....but i have not been able to access internet
i use a netone connection.
i suppose the only parameters required are 'the number to dial' , 'user 
name ' and password'
do i require to fill in dns nameserver addresses and the search domain 
in 'networking' ?
if so what are the details of bsnl servers ?
please help.
 I use an external modem which was detected easily and when I activate 
the modem i can hear the ring out but no handshake
