You're right. This kind of thing sucks, but I guess we have to
understand the pressure which MS exerts on hardware suppliers. Its
pretty awesome. We've seen the OLPC going in a similar direction.
And I notice when you look at the Dell website (even the page for more
info on ubuntu installed Mini's) you have to put up with the "Dell
recommends Windows Vista® Home Premium" crap in the header of the
page. I just try and not get too irritated about it. But its hard
:-) Like the way they disguise the true cost of Windows on the
machine by changing the hardware spec and offering a "discount". It
seems that the if the vendors are obliged to put in the advertising
banner and to disguise the OS price if they want to maintain
favourable status with MS, which obviously they all do, Abuse of
monopoly comes to mind ...

Anyway, rant aside, I am not wedded to one netbook brand or another.
In response to the original enquiry, I was suggesting that netbook
prices are being driven down harder and faster than traditional
thin-client hardware which probably makes them good candidates for a
thin(nish) client setup in schools. Mind you, I don't have any good
data to back that assertion up. Per seat price is obviously one
factor which drives LTSP adoption.

I know the original point was also about moving from second hand odds
and ends to new purpose-procured hardware, but I can't help thinking
these fashion accessory netbooks are going to be hitting the second
hand (or dump/disposal) market much faster than their more boring
utilitarian friends. I suspect that like phones, there might be a
strong fair-weather-friend characteristic to the entire genre.

Regards
Bob
