You don't need a spare partition. The Ubuntu installer can easily resize
an NTFS partition, and the default "guided" option makes it easy to do
so: just drag the slider to divide your disk space between the Windows
and Linux partitions.

I've done this successfully with XP and Vista, but caveat emptor: back
up anything important first.
