With all due respect, one has to look at the target audience and the 
message.  Simply stated, Lubuntu is marketed as a distro for older 
hardware so users have a very clear expectation as to why they should 
use it.  Ubuntu unity is the flagship so that has a natural draw and 
message.  Ubuntu GNOME is targeted toward users who like the Ubuntu 
distro but want the GNOME experience.  To that end, the user has to be 
knowledgeable enough to understand the differences between Unity and GNOME.

Case in point,  This last Saturday, I showed a bunch of computer users 
(reasonably technical)  the GNOME and Unity systems side by side with 
two laptops.  GNOME used the Dash to Dock so the dock was always 
visible.  Most said that they could not see much of a difference between 
the two systems.

So, IMO, to move up in the Distro ranking would require that we refine 
our message to resonate with the average user.
