Don't know where to start everyone, I am so sorry....

Hi :)
True, but i have faith in the people on this list.
So, i am guessing that the license is for Windows, specifically Xp,
and that we just helped someone recover Xp onto a machine where it's
version of Windows ran into some sort of unlikely catastrophic failure
after installing Ubuntu (hopefully as a dual-boot). Errr, so that
makes it more likely to be Vista because Xp is a lot more robust but
Vista, especially pre-Sp1 is very flaky. Vista and Xp become
unsupported very soon while Win7 has nearly a whole year left. Of
course it is already tricky to get a Win7 license now as MS are
phasing it out in readiness for it to become unsupported. So, it
could be Win7 that he is chasing but that just seems unlikely.
While Windows license numbers are usually marked on the side of the
machine's case i'm guessing it's not there this time so maybe the
version of Windows being "reinstalled" is not the same version that
was originally on the machine, perhaps an upgrade of some sort as that
is the most frequent way of being completely clueless about where the
license number is written down. A fresh new install would involve a
Cd or Dvd with the number being on the Dvd itself or alongside the
download.
Hopefully the remainder of the advice was how to install Ubuntu so
that it would do everything he wanted in order to be able to avoid the
current messiness of Windows.
Ohh, btw folks! Someone who has only ever used Windows before had to
use the Ubuntu 12.04 machine here because all the Windows ones were
being used by other people. Her reaction was "WOW!! That looks
swish!" and then grinned and stood up straighter looking pleased to
have been rewarded by being given the nicer machine than the Win7 pos
or the dire Xp ones that she has previously used. She's not used a
Mac or anything before so needed a tiny bit of guidance but seemed
really happy all day. Much faster, much less agro.
Regards from
Tom :)
