I do not think writing for a specific release is required, but perhaps
having some sort of documentation / tag that indicates which release the
documentation has been tested with.
I can appreciate making the documentation as broad as possible, but
there should be some indication to readers that the documentation was
not tested / written using the release or distribution they are working
on.
