In italian team we have a "crisis of vocation". At the moment we have few
contributor. The communication has saved us at the moment. People who want
to contribute feel "gratified" if they are thanked for their contribution.
So I bring you our experience.
We use this system:
- Write on our blog [1] that is present on planet and twitter to notify
news about our group or our documentation (new guides, revisions and
translations).
- We have create some tables (such [2]) where people can find easily the
work that need to do. This also to avoid duplication: people that working
on the same document, topics covered in different pages.
- A montly report pages [3] where we can document our work.
- Finally, we would like to schedule meetings every two months, but we are
few and at this moment it makes little sense.
Disadvantages: more work for administrator. In addition than verification
compliance with the guidelines need to maintain blog, ToDo table and
report update.
But if there are people who can do this with consistently the system can
work.
In conclusion, I agree. The road is to communicate to increase visibility.
