Sound troubleshooter

Hi guys,
A lot of Ubuntu users suffer from problems with their sound. There's
plenty of material out there on troubleshooting sound problems, but it's
spread far and wide, over the wiki, Ubuntu forums and elsewhere.
I'm looking for a few people to work on building a sound troubleshooter
for the next Ubuntu release. The idea would be to collect a list of
moderately common sound problems, find diagnostic steps which could be
used to reliably identify specific problems, and then advise the user on
how to fix the issue. I hope that this will result in a quick,
easy-to-use way for people to fix their sound.
There's plenty of scope for reusing existing material, but it would
probably have to be edited heavily. How you actually go about putting it
all together is up to you - whatever works best. This stuff can get
complicated, so you'd probably have to work with developers and upstream
to write satisfactory material for some issues too. For an added
challenge, it should also be written for users with little technical
knowledge.
Any takers?
Thanks,
Phil
