Sorry for the delay in replying, and welcome!

You mentioned that you'd be interested in "intermediate to high level
kernel functionality". The Documentation Team mostly concentrates on
user-centred documentation, and there's quite a bit of kernel
documentation out there already. Do you have any specific ideas on that
topic?

You can get some idea of what tasks the Doc Team works on here [1].
Alternatively, if you're interested in writing about Python, the Python
Recipes [2] section of the wiki really needs some attention!
