Good job.  It seems clearer and I think more people would read it. I
think people may misunderstand the section:

+In 1970, Bell Labs programmers Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie
+developed a new operating system called Unix.
+In the 1970s and 1980s, many people created Unix variants.
+One of these was Minix, from computing professor Andrew Tanenbaum.

"Variants" kind of implies there's a relationship (beyond independent
re-implementation) between AT&T UNIX, Minix, and GNU/Linux.
