diff for switching guide

Hi Neil,

I've merged your patch into the attached patch (with a few edits here
and there). Thanks for your work!

I'm happy with the state of the Ubuntu version of the guide now.
Unfortunately, I'm unable to contribute much more time towards it this
week (I'm moving on Thursday), so I think this will be the last patch I
can manage before DocString Freeze.
