Hi folks -
As you may know, there is an official Ubuntu book being published by
Prentice Hall. The book is being written by Mako Hill, Jono Bacon, Corey
Burger, Jonathan Jesse, and Ivan Krstic. One of the reasons why this
book has Canonical's support is that we have negotiated with the
publisher that the book content be made available under a free license
and that parts of it can be included in Dapper itself.
The complete book isn't finished yet, but it looks like we will be able
to include the three main technical chapters in Dapper. These are the
Ubuntu Desktop (Chapter 3), the Kubuntu Desktop (Chapter 7) and Support
and Typical Problems (Chapter 6). The Support chapter is the one that we
solicited help with on the Fridge and have about a dozen "recipes"
contributed by users, so it is nice to include that. These are the
largest and, I think, most important chapters in the book. Each is about
40+ pages.
The publisher will produce these chapters as HTML. Copyediting is still
underway, but I expect a size estimate from the publisher by 15 May and
expect to have the copyedited files by 23 May. The size estimate is
important because we are so short on space on the CD image itself.
I'm not sure where/how it is best to include this material. It should
be some place relatively discoverable (in a menu? in ExampleContent?
both?) Matt Zimmerman has asked if you all can suggest a way to do this
and include a placeholder now so that we can drop in the final content
as soon as we get it.
Comments? Questions?
Thanks
Jane
