You (and Alastair Otter) are correct: it seems to be a large hole in
Ubuntu that it doesn't contain software for connecting to the Internet
by all common methods, and it is a large hole in the shipped help that
it hardly covers connecting to the Internet at all. Telling people to
wget a file, or to go online, to get information about going online is
obnoxious.
Is it now true that all information on help.ubuntu.com is public
domain? If so, I'll make a patch to incorporate the networking
information into the Desktop Guide ... minus the parts about going to
linmodems.org, installing packages, etc, which are similarly begging
the question.
