Found this and thought I would mention it. Not sure whose page this is.

http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/ch01s02.html#root-and-sudo

See second paragraph ** marks. Don't like anything preformed, and Rouge
applications just make your cheeks red :>)

Root And Sudo
The use of the root user account is unnecessary in Ubuntu, when having
to preform ** perform ** actions on your system that require root
privileges the "sudo" application enables ordinary users to preform **
perform ** these actions instead. The first user account you created on
your system during installation will, by default, have access to sudo.
You can restrict and enable sudo access to users with the "Users and
Groups" application (see uag for more information).

When you run an application that requires root privileges, sudo will ask
you to input your normal user password first. This insures that rouge **
rogue ** applications cannot damage your system, and serves as a
reminder that you are about to preform actions that can damage your
system also.
