Proposal to donate the writing of an ebook/book

I would have to agree on the merit of having an official Ubuntu book.
Having an official glossy-covered Ubuntu book in the bookshops and
newsagencies would provide great advertising for the distribution.

If people haven't heard of Ubuntu because they aren't in the loop but
they see it on the shelf, they are going to at least pick it up and
read the 'rockin' description and screenshots on the back. The book
and included CD could be targetted at a Dapper+1 release, our
documentation should be slick by then.

The problem is putting a price on it or not. We could distribute the
books via ShipIt for free if there were to be funding for it, but we
wouldn't get it onto the shelves in bookstores without a price tag for
the stores to put a markup on. We could then only give books away for
free from Ubuntu "stalls" at conferences..

The question is - Microsoft have Microsoft Press which is distributed
in mainstream bookstores, why can't we have Ubuntu Press?

Naaman.
