I don't think you need to dial up just to test the tool. As long as
scanModem runs and tells you which driver to use[1] and where to go
next, that means it's working on Edgy.

Shouldn't we CC discuss at linmodems.org to get some feedback?

PS. I'm not aware of any alternatives to scanmodem. afaik, if it doesn't
work, that means dial up users are pretty much shut out of Ubuntu.
