Thanks for this extremely long and detailed explanation. It's clear to
me that there is a problem with the existing documentation on this.

I wonder if it might be a good idea to get some advice from the
developers on this complex problem? Best practices about things like
whether to use "nvidia-glx-config" or "nvidia-xconfig" are things that
they are well equipped to tell us.

With your permission I can poke some developers and ask for some
pointers about what they envisage as the best approach for users.
