Hi there,
I made a few additions to the Add Applications section:
- a bit to the introduction of package managers.
- changed RPM and DEB to .rpm and .deb for consistency. Could be the
other way around, too, I suppose.
I also wrote this following bit about installing applications from
tarballs, but I couldn't figure out how to add it in without getting a
truckload of errors when validating it. I suppose it needs to be added
as a section somewhere, but I wouldn't know where to look for that.
<sect2 status="review">
<title>Install from tar.gz files</title>
<procedure>
<para>You may come across files with tar.gz or
tar.bz2 suffix while browsing the web. These are package files known as
<emphasis>Tarballs</emphasis> that are widely used in Linux and Unix. If
you find an application in the Tarball format that you wish to install,
it is recommended that you check if there is a native Ubuntu .deb
package of the application available through a package manager, and that
you install that version instead. This guarantees that the program is
completely compatible with your system. If there is no native Ubuntu
version available in any of the Ubuntu repositories, you can use the
command line to install the tar.gz file yourself by following the
installation instructions that come with the application.
</para>
</procedure>
</sect2>
hope this is useful,
Andreas
