This was bought up within the docteam a few months ago, gnome-app-install can
also not enable universe/multiverse by itself either. The explanation on how to
use Synaptic is pretty simple and easy to follow, in the instructions it tells
you that you can either click on search to find a package or find it in the
menu, if you choose the later method it gives you the category for each package
as well as the package name. For a while we did have some info about
gnome-app-install in the FAQ Guide but it was removed so as to not confuse the
user, and just stick to Synaptic because it does everything we need. If you had
an issue with this then the time to bring it up was several weeks (even months
ago), trying to document a moving target such as the Ubuntu operating system is
not an easy task.
There is nothing stopping people using either install program, its just that one
only focuses on Gnome apps, where as the FAQ Guide focuses on Ubuntu as a whole.
In my opinion gnome-app-install has a poorly designed interface also, just
because we have exploding menus doesn't mean its the best option for everything.
