You can add the most obscure applications from Universe and they will
probably get their own menu item; but Synaptic will not get one just
because it is installed by default, but unloved.   I find that a bit
of a mismatch in installation behaviour between applications.

cool; I didn't know that.   Which I guess makes the previous point acceptable.
