I believe that using icons will make the job of translating and
maintaining the site a touch harder and would prefer to see textual
labels. They would automatically be more accessable and translators
wouldn't need gimp skills.

If you do that I can see us getting about 50 unusable examples of how
not to design from well wishers ;-) With a couple of excellent pieces
hidden away in the pile and there is always one nutter who doesn't
accept that someone elses work was choosen over his. Strangely it's
never one of the talented ones ;-) lol For some reason it's always the
case when you ask for anything 'designy' from the free software
community. Call it sparkes' rule, no, sorry I already used that one we
are now up to about sparkes' 121st rule ;-)
I prefer the idea of textual icons. Perhaps a wiki wishlist item so we
can add a drop down in the edit screen to show a documents status?
can we reach an aggreement on this?
