I have a couple related questions. Is there any use for "beta testers"
that maybe the LP team could control, and what can package
maintainers/developers do to help?

I know you guys are working a lot on automated stuff, but I know I
wouldn't mind spending a couple hours here and there doing perhaps
mundane but not easily automated work. I was thinking of something
like 5-a-day but for getting packages linked to upstream branches or
similar or doing code import QA (like looking over failed imports for
obvious problems like bad URLs or known bugs).
