Ubuntu autoconfigures it with no user interaction, as soon as it detects
that a monitor appeared.

Since monitor autodetection doesn't work on my hardware (intel video;
could be that polling is just disabled to save power by default), this
happens as soon as I *launch* gnome-display-properties, which I then
close without changing anything.
