Would it be worth simplifying the extras .desktop location to simply
be a "chroot" under /opt:

  [/opt]/usr/share/applications/*.desktop

(and dittos for the rest), this would then be closer to what the
regular packaging tools expect and make it easier to convert back and
forth?
