Allow removing/adding specific icons from the indicator panel

It was possible to remove the messaging menu from the top panel by removing
the indicator applet in Karmic.  However in Lucid the sound preferences icon
also uses the indicator applet and hence there is no way to specifically
remove the messaing menu.

Is there any plans to allow selective removal of icons from the indicator
panel?  The way it currently works is annoying because it forces certain
icons on the user even if they don't need them!

What is the basic purpose of the indicator applet anyway when we have the
notification area already?
