I personally like the idea. Note that there are packages for
feisty-wallpapers and gutsy-wallpapers in the archive. If you do this,
it would probably make sense for ubuntu-wallpapers-history to replace
those packages.

lp:ubuntu-wallpapers only seems to have history dating back to Gutsy.
Though you can get Hardy from the package importer at
lp:ubuntu/hardy/ubuntu-wallpapers

For older releases, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Archives might be
useful, but it doesn't seem to have the original images in all cases.

Also useful might be: http://people.ubuntu.com/~kirkland/Museum/

It contains usable virtual appliance images of each of the retired
Ubuntu releases. You can probably extract the images....
