package information

Hi
I am a 3rd year engineering student. I want to do some  linux
development work in boot sector area. Basically I want to do some
modifications while OS is being booted. For this I should have an
access to source code of that package. But unfortunately I am not able
to get name of that package. On which package I should be working on.
It would be very helpful if you could provide me the same.
