I assume you're asking what's my use case for identd rather than why I
want software Canonical relies on in main as I believe the latter is
reasonably well understood - but I'm happy to expand on it, if it's not.

In any event our use case for identd is as a PostgreSQL authentication
mechanism inside a switched, MAC-locked internal network with
(relatively) trusted machines.
