While it's only remotely useful on closed networks with trusted/known
clients (such as the one that Canonical runs in-house), I suspect the
use-case for ident auth in Postgres is still sufficiently large. I
can't say what else people might use identd for, but Postgres can't be
the only client/server app from the old skool UNIX world that still
thinks it's a useful/handy thing to have around, regardless of its
limited scope (and complete lack of trust path) when used with
uncontrolled clients.
