That's just not thinking forth dimensionally!
Besides, it wouldn't be Canonical for the most part, it'd be individual
projects and people. So long as the freedoms of Free and Open source
software as passed onto recipients, there should never be a problem with
paying for work to be done.
Unless we all love seeing each other unpaid. Kindness is great, but it
doesn't buy bread.
You might be right about popularity, maybe it's not yet time. But at
some point we're going to have to start thinking about how to make this
boat work economically, so those with money and no skills can retain
some form of a voice in the direction and shape of the software that'll
get made and those with skills and no money can meet those needs.
