About a year ago. It wasn't that it was investigated and found wanting
in some way; it was that Phillip (the upstream author) advised us that
squashfs-lzma was unlikely ever to be accepted upstream even if squashfs
was, because the upstream kernel maintainers were unwilling to accept a
new compression method in the kernel.

It would be up to the kernel team whether they'd want to accept the
burden of maintaining that delta forever. I know that at one time or
another there's been pressure on them to help with getting squashfs
upstream.
