I agree there are serious questions that need to be answered about the
viability of .27, but there is at least one advantage not mentioned on
the list to 2.6.27: Fedora 10's published schedule has them shipping
around the same time as Ubuntu 8.10 and on a 2.6.27 kernel. I can't
recall the last time Fedora and Ubuntu actually shipped the same base
revision, and it will certainly help in sharing patches. openSUSE's
published plan is to ship 2.6.27 as well (a few months later).
Settling on 2.6.27 should help Ubuntu reach it's goals of
collaboration and World Domination. If it's possible to run
certification testing on 2.6.27 in time for 8.10, it sounds like a
good idea to do so to me.

Greg K-H mentions in a talk to Google
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2SED6sewRw) how stable release series
are done and that distributions are often the ones who manage it. Your
questions and concerns are equally valid when asked to the kernel
community; perhaps the Plumber's conference in September can find a
better stable point release system that suits the people who need it
in the first place.
