Nested branches:

As I understand from LarstiQ, you can have both by-value and
by-reference branches. I think for the usecase we are talking here, you
could compare 'by-reference' branches to the svn:external feature of
svn. You could perhaps maintain a 'meta-branch', which holds all
branches together.

TBH, I have the impression you are proposing to have an svn repository,
just without svn.
