It has brought me to

I got notified that the maintainer script failed with exitcode 1. In
this particular case, the maintainer script wasn't too helpful with
giving a lot of diagnostics (you need to set a special environment
variable to enable debugging there), but the crash has been
reported. The crash file from /var/crash/exim4-config.0.crash has the
following contents:

I suspect if the postinst script would have given better diagnostics
what failed, it would have taken me even less time to figure out what's
wrong. In this particular case, I was lucky that this bug has just been
fixed in debian and we could sync the fix from there.
