Proposal for solving CD Size problems

Shouldn't the distribution medium be based on the required requirements, not
the recommended ones? I know I've installed Ubuntu on quite a few computers
that don't have DVD drives, so making it DVD only would be a nuisance.
The multi CD option sounds the best to me. How about a Core Ubuntu CD, which
contains a decent base desktop (e.g. dapper). The 'Recommended' setup would
require connecting to the net to download extra packages or could get them
from the optional CD2, CD3, etc.
I'd like to point out I'm not against a DVD install disc per say, I'm just
against a DVD as the only install medium.
One last thing, beware of feature creep (please?). I'd rather have a small,
simple setup with programs that will be installed on demand, rather than a
bloated setup that has almost everything, most of which I'll never use and
just serve to confuse me.
