Some solutions have been available in Debian/Ubuntu for a long time.
Specifically these two packages:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/net/whereami
http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/net/laptop-netconf
Personally, I'm glad DHCP has been configured to work everywhere I go,
so network manager works (and works well) for my particular case.
