Actually, NM works only with interfaces that aren't configured at all
(if /etc/network/interfaces contains 'iface eth0 dhcp', NM won't touch
it). So, if you configure your interface with network-admin, NM won't
touch it on next reboot.

I didn't notice any problems with this one.

>  * you need networking to work before a user logs in

This can be done with network-admin, and again, NM won't configure that
interface.

Other than this, it has some issues, but it's much more usable than
network-admin, IMHO.
