In the mean time, I've been hitting around the idea of a package that installs
a self-contained 32bit chroot, bootstraps debootstrap to create a 32bit
chroot, or simply installs a script (or better, a simple GUI) to simplify and
automate the creation of the chroot. Another script (or GUI) would handle
installation of packages such as mplayer and firefox into the chroot, as well
as dpkg-diversions and symlinkings.

If this sounds feasible but no one else is motivated to write it, I could put
it together, but not in time for Edgy. Let me preemptively address the
argument that this isn't a real solution. It does solve the problem of
running proprietary apps, wine, and code that just isn't 64bit clean (like
partimage) on 64bit systems, and I see it as a stopgap measure, not a
long-term solution.
