something that bothered me before already is that there was a dpper
upgrades wikipage (before we had all documents moving to
help.ubuntu.com) where very clearly was stated that update-manager is
preferred over apt-get... i searched for this page several times already
and tried to find out where that line was gone, but that horrible
redirecting practice of the wiki for docs that were moved to h.u.c
simply doesnt allow to see a page history ...
the current dapper upgrades page says:
"Upgrading with the Update Manager application
This is the simplest way for most users, especially if you are not an
expert."
on the edgy page it is:
"Upgrading using apt-get
Please note - this method is much less reliable. Using Update Manager
(see above) is likely to be much less problematic. "
both dont point out the importance of the usage of update-manager over
apt-get...
given that the question "should i use apt-get or update-manager" comes
up very often in ubuntu-users and the answer is often "there is no
difference" we should really put a more enlightening wording in ...
