I'm not advocating that.  I'm suggesting that (using an nvidia card as an 
example here) based on your hardware and/or your driver selection at install 
time etc., xorg would cycle through nvidia, nv and vesa, in that order, until 
one works or it runs out of drivers to try.  You're right - I can't imagine 
watching my computer cycle through every available video driver in an attempt 
to get X working.
