One solution could be to include a feature in Nautilus (maybe via a
Nautilus script) that allows users to right-click on a folder and choose
"share this folder with other users". That would set the permissions
correctly on this folder, and create a link to this folder on each
user's desktop. Choosing "don't share this folder with other users"
would revert the permissions as they were before, and remove the link
from the user's desktops.
