You forgot something very important. Windows has only 5 versions one
would actively want to support, because they are used. But for GNU/Linux
there are probably over 100 distributions (even if only 5 are really
major) and each has at least 2 versions that are actively used.
It is not really practicable to support all this systems for a ISV IHMO.
I don't know a solution either. LSB isn't really a good solution, but
each distribution doing their own thing isn't good either...
