On dapper, I just happen to have gthumb, f-spot, and picasa installed.
After loading a single directory with 420 images (17MB total), I saw RSS of
25MB gthumb
47MB f-spot
46MB Picasa2 (51 if you count explorer.exe, which is generic wine overhead)
Doubling the number of images by adding a second copy of the directory
increased f-spot's usage to 55MB and Picasa's to 53MB.
It didn't affect gthumb at all because that only looks at one
directory at a time.
Gthumb really is a lot simpler than either of the other two apps.
FWIW http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-182401.html
has a few posts that say Picasa scales better than f-spot with
much larger numbers (e.g. a gigabyte) of images.
Dunno why.
