[1] has some proposals for a hotpluggable XInput system. Whilst the page
itself is quite old, its contents is still up to date and the
architecture seems to be well-though out. It has two interesting
bugzilla links [2,3] covering an evdev input driver and an XInput
hotplugging implementation. I'm very optimistic that at least Ubuntu
6.10 will have better X11 hotplugging support. It's really great to see
people working on these issues.
