GStreamer 0.8 and 0.10 are "parallel installable", which means that both
can be installed at once. It's safe to remove 0.8 if you don't have
anything that needs it. At the moment I think there are still packages
that use it - basically if apt complains that something needs it, so
will have to be removed, then you still need it.
There are separate plugins for 0.8 and 0.10, so whether you need the 0.8
ones depends on whether you need gstreamer 0.8 still.

gst-register isn't needed in 0.10, GStreamer deals with that by itself.
The 0.8 version updates the registry of plugins for gst 0.8; 0.10 isn't
affected.
